Northwood wins Highway 53 battle with Solon Springs

The Northwood Evergreens defeated the Solon Springs Eagles 9-5 in a non-conference baseball game Friday evening in Minong.

The host Evergreens scored once in the first inning, three times in the third and five times in the fourth.

The Eagles scored twice in the second inning, once in the fourth and made things interesting with a two-run seventh inning.

Solon Springs finished with four hits and Northwood seven. Each team committed four errors.

Solon Springs got a double, single and RBI from Caleb Utyro, a double and RBI from Dustin Lietha, and a single and RBI from Kevin Zamzow.

Cody Utyro suffered the loss on the mound for the Eagles, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

“Errors cost us again,” SSHS coach Nathan Ahlberg said. “Cody did a good job of throwing strikes and forcing Northwood to put the ball in play, we just didn’t help him out in the field. We’ve got to resolve our fielding problems. “

Solon Springs (4-3 overall, 3-2 Indianhead Conference), is at Butternut Monday and hosts Ironwood for a doubleheader Tuesday.

Northwood is at Clayton Monday and Turtle Lake Tuesday.
