Duluth Padres win season opener

SPOONER, Wis. -- Bob Eastman was 5-for-5with a double and three RBIs to lead the Duluth Padres to an 8-6 win over the Spooner Cardinals in a non-league amateur baseball game Saturday afternoon in Spooner.

It was the season-opening game for both teams.

Spooner scored two runs and had the potential tying-run at-bat in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Chris Vendela struck out the last two batters of the game as he earned the save.

Nathan Windschill earned the win in relief of starter Anthony Bush, who allowed three unearned runs on two hits and two walks in four innings. He had three strikeouts. Windschill allowed one unearned run in the fifth inning, and Gary Fritch worked a perfect sixth inning to set the table for Vendela, who allowed two runs on one hit, three walks, and two hit batsmen in three innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Noah Hobbs was two-for-five with a double and two RBIs for Duluth.

Spooner's Tom Romportl was three-for-five with two RBIs.

The Padres are back in action May 1 at Cumberland. Their home opener at UMD's Bulldog Park is at 1:30 p.m. on May 15 against the Ashland Merchants.
