Solon Springs baseball team falls at Mellen

The Solon Springs baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 6-4 loss to the Mellen Granite Diggers Monday evening in Mellen.

The Eagles’ third win in a row as 9-5 over the Hurley Midgets last Thursday in Solon Springs.

Solon Springs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Mellen answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs.

The Eagles tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning, but once again the Diggers responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

“Both teams made mistakes that led to runs in the fourth inning,” SSHS coach Nathan Ahlberg said. “Mellen was able to execute in the 6th to score twice, which was the difference in the game.”

Tyler Long suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits, three walks and six strikeouts.

Offensively Long was 3-for-4 with a double. Cole Klinzing doubled, singled and knocked in a run, Brett Missinne had a hit and RBI and Josh Taylor had a hit and scored a run.

The Eagles (3-1, 2-1) host Drummond at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Eagles 9, Midgets 5

Solon Springs managed just three hits, but took advantage of four Midget errors.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first inning and two runs in the second and third.

Kevin Zamzow had two of the Eagles’ hits and scored two runs. Caleb Utyro had the other hit along with an RBI. Klinzing scored a run and knocked in two others.

Taylor was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs in five innings. He also struck out eight and walked four batters.

EAGLE EXTRAS: Hurley had eight hits. … Solon Springs committed three errors. … The Midgets scored two runs in the second and fifth innings and one run in the sixth.
