For a limited time, the Northland Chapter, American Red Cross will offer $200 need-based scholarships for area residents who register for upcoming Nursing Assistant Training in Duluth.

The Northland Chapter offers an 80-hour curriculum approved by the Minnesota Department of Health that prepares students for the state exam to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). The next class will be held May 16 through June 29, 2011 at the Northland Chapter office located at 2524 Maple Grove Road, Duluth, MN. The course also includes 16 hours of clinical experience at Benedictine Health Center in Duluth.

Scholarship applications must be received at the chapter by May 1, 2011.

“We offer an accelerated program that allows graduates to begin working in half the time it takes to complete some community colleges courses,” said chapter Executive Director Judy Hanne Gonzalez.

“With Red Cross training, students master fundamental academic and social skills needed to be a successful CNA,” Gonzalez said. “As a Red Cross nurse assistant, graduates are an important part of a health care team that works to provide compassionate care for nursing home residents and patients.”

The course fee is $800 with an optional Home Health Aide module for an additional $200. Sherman noted that following certification, CNAs are reimbursed for the balance of their tuition, if they work 90 days in a Medicare-reimbursed nursing home in Minnesota, as mandated by federal law.
