The Solon Springs baseball team opened its season with a wins on Friday and Monday. The Eagles defeated Frederic 14-9 then Bayfield 9-2. Both games were played in Solon Springs.
Eagles 14, Vikings 9
Trailing 6-5, the Eagles scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for an 11-6 lead over the Vikings.
Frederic came back with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Eagles matched them with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Solon Springs then held on to the victory by keeping the Vikings scoreless in the top of the seventh.
“It was great to finally get out of the gym and get in a game,” SSHS coach Nathan Ahlberg said. “Our guys have been working hard in the gym for three weeks, and that work paid off Friday night.”
Tyler Long led the Eagles with a double, two singles, two runs scored and an RBI. Kevin Zamzow also had three hits, two runs and an RBI and Cody Utyro was 2-for-45 with four RBIs. Utyro also picked up the pitching victory.
“I’m very pleased with 13 hits and six walks over six innings,” Ahlberg said. “Our hitters did a nice job of putting the ball in play and putting pressure on their defense.”
Solon Springs pitching also only gave us six hits, but walked seven batters and its defense allowed three errors.
“We’re not going to win too many games walking seven and making three errors,” Ahlberg said.

Eagles 9, Trollers 2
Long picked up win on the mound for the Eagles tossing a four hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk in five innings. He also helped out offensively, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
Josh Taylor was also 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Cole Klinzing was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
“We talk to our pitchers often about the importance of not giving up walks, which often come around to score,” Ahlberg said. “Tyler Long did a great job of commanding the strike zone and making Bayfield swing the bat. He gave up only one walk, and that was with two outs in the fifth inning. He gave up four hits, but no one reached third base while he was on the mound.
“Both Josh and Tyler had two nice at-bats in the first inning, each driving in a run with a two-strike count. Cole also drove in two in the second inning with two outs. Those were three key at-bats in the ballgame.”
The Eagles (2-0, 1-0) host Hurley Thursday and Butternut Friday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
