SHS girls clinch LSC title

Spartans improve to 15-5 with six-point win over the Trojans

The Superior High School girls basketball team clinched the Lake Superior Conference championship with a 58-52 victory over the Duluth Central Trojans Thursday night in the DCHS gym.

Hailey Kontny led the Spartans with 14 points. Jessica Lindstrom, who played with the flu, was next with 10 points. Kallyn Lagro added nine points, Sam DeMeyer had eight, Cassy O’Neill and Abby Clemons had six apiece, Raya Kosey had three and Shannon Johnstad helped out with two.

Mary Von Rueden led Central with 18 points.

The Spartans improved to 15-5 overall and 9-0 in the LSC. They began the night tied in the league with Hermantown (16-9, 9-1).

Superior has won the LSC title three of the past five seasons.

Superior plays at Hayward at 7:30 p.m. Monday, then wraps up the regular season by hosting the Ashland Oredockers at 7:30 p.m. on March 4.

The WIAA playoffs begin March 8. The Spartans will find out their seed and opponent at this weekend’s seeding meeting.
