Spartan girls down Greyhounds

The Superior High School girls basketball team defeated the Duluth East Greyhounds 55-38 Tuesday night in the SHS gym. The victory avenged a double-overtime loss earlier in the season at Duluth East.

Jessica Lindstrom had a strong game for the Spartans, finishing with a game-high 27 points. Sam DeMeyer added 10 points, Hailey Kontny and Raya Kosey had six points each, Cassy O’Neill added four points and Kallyn Lagro had two.

Macie Dorow led the Greyhounds with 10 points.

Superior led by four points early in the game before East scored four straight points for a 7-7 game.

A Lindstrom 3-pointer, a free throw from Kontny and a basket after an offensive rebound by O’Neill gave the Spartans a 13-7 lead after the first quarter.

Superior scored the first nine points of the second quarter for a 22-7 lead with 4:43 on the clock.

East ended it drought with three minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Darow. Another basket got East within 22-12.

The Spartans regained control and outscored East 7-3 down the stretch for a 29-15 lead at the half.

Lindstrom enjoyed a good first half with 14 points.

The Spartans continued strong in the third quarter building a 37-15 lead on a Kontny steal and layup.

A Lagro layup gave the Spartans a 41-21 lead after three quarters of play.

East made things interesting by scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter for a 41-27 game.

Lindstrom ended the Hounds’ run with a basket after a nice feed from Sam DeMeyer.

The Spartans’ lead stayed around 15 points the rest of the game as they improved to 12-4 on the season.

The Spartans host Cloquet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Hudson at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
