2 Spartans advance to wrestlilng sectionals

Superior High School’s Nick Kirchoff and Ben Regner advanced to the WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament after finishing second and third, respectively, at Saturday’s WIAA regional tournament in New Richmond.

The Divison 1, Section 1 tournament is at 10 a.m. Saturday in Marshfield. The top two finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament Feb. 24-26 in Madison.

Kirchoff, who picked up 18 points in the 135-pound weight class, pinned Eau Claire North’s Matt Schroeder, won by decision over Eau Claire Memorial’s Ryan Gallagher then lost to Hudson’s Tanner Owens in the championship match.

Regner, who picked up 10 team points at 215 pounds, received a bye, lost to River Falls’ Matt Linehan and defeated New Richmond’s Jorden Aufderhar in double overtime.

Hudson won the team title with 222.5 points. Superior finished seventh out of eight teams with 60 points.
