Get ready for another midwinter trek from Ashland to Washburn across frozen Chequamegon Bay at the 15th annual Book across the Bay. The event, open to skiers and snow shoe enthusiasts of all ages and ability levels, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 19.
The 10-kilometer race will start on the bay near the marina in Ashland, and end at Thompson’s West End Park in Washburn.
The course will be groomed for both skating and classical-style skiing, and will be marked by a thousand candles in ice luminaries. Along the route, rest stops provide refreshments to all participants.
Registration and bib/timing chip pickup runs 5-8 p.m. Feb. 18 and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. race day in the big heated tent set up near the start area.
On Friday evening, food and beverages are available for sale in the registration tent, and later that evening the “Band Before the Book” provides live musical entertainment. These activities are open to all community members — not just registered participants.
On race day, the registration tent will feature the Book across the Bay/Northland College EXPO, where many local clubs, businesses and organizations will be on hand to share information, sell baked goods and tell you more about what they do for the local community.
Outdoor activities will also be held during the day Feb. 19, including a sledding hill — conditions permitting — and hot air balloon rides.
After the race, a party featuring food and live music with Fido and the Love Dogs is held in a heated tent in Washburn. Top ski finishers in age-group categories will receive prizes.
Registration forms are available at the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce and from the Book across the Bay at www.batb.org. Participants also have the option to register and pay for the event entirely online, using a link on the “Registration” page of the Book across the Bay web site.
Book across the Bay is a family event, but there are possible dangers involved due to unpredictable weather and other conditions.
Children under the age of 8 should be closely accompanied by an adult for the duration of the race, and it is advisable children younger than 5 do not participate. No dogs or other animals will be allowed on the course during the event. No vehicles with wheels such as bicycles or wagons will be allowed on the course.
