The Northwestern Tigers wrestling team lost to the Hayward Hurricanes 60-24 Tuesday night in Maple.
The Tigers won four matches on the night. Josiah Vik pinned Will Dunlap at 125 pounds, Shawn Hegblum pinned Billy Mathison at 130, Travis Branna pinned Lucas Cain at 140 and William Pedersen pinned Jon Mullally.
“We came off a nice weekend of wrestling in Merrill and our guys have really grown as wrestlers and as young people,” NHS coach Bob Coleman said. “It’s great to see. We keep saying we have this young team but tonight I told them it’s time to grow up and we set a goal of winning more matches than Hayward.
“We can’t control the forfeits, but we can do something about the rest of the matches. It was great to them win 4-of-7 matches. It was a great team effort.”
Tigers’ Samantha Schafter saw her first varsity action for the Tigers at 135 pounds. Unfortunately, she was pinned by Anthony Dougherty.
“Samantha kept the tempo going by battling every second she was on the mat,” Coleman said. “She did a nice job and really fought with that Tiger attitude.”
Pederson’s pin was his 101st career victory.
“He’s had a nice career so far and I’m sure he’s going to keep building on it,” said Coleman, who also lauded the performance of freshman Jay Karich.
“Jay has been a joy to coach. He’s a great leader for us and works hard,” Coleman said.
“He’s giving up about 14 pounds every time he steps on the mat, but he always battles. I gave him something to work on in this match and he did exactly as he was asked. “He did get caught with a through and was pinned, but I was very happy with what he was doing against a bigger and more experienced wrestler.
“I’m very proud of our wrestlers and our coaching staff they do a great job.”
The Tigers host a quad at 5 p.m. Friday.
