Amber sisters place first and seventh

Team Amber is off to another successful season of cross country skiing.

Sisters Nicolette and Olivia Amber placed first and seventh, respectively, at the Mesabi Invite at Giants Ridge Saturday. The two Northwestern High School students were among the 1,301 skiers to compete in the high school race.

In the classic race, Olivia Amber, a sophomore, finished seventh of 381 skiers in 20:16.0. Winning the race was Zoe Reker of Roseville, Minn. in 19:36.6.

Nicolette Amber, a junior, won the freestyle race in 17:55.7. She was more than 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Niki Reker of Roseville. The varsity girls freestyle field contained 192 entrants.

Despite having only two skiers on their “team,” the Amber sisters matched up well with the competition. In the overall team standings, the NHS students were 40th of 67. All the teams scoring ahead of the Northwestern duo had four scoring skiers, and most of the teams finishing behind the Tiger girls also had four competitors adding to the team score.
