Going for the gold

More than 75 kids had a chance to share the pool at Superior High School with a couple of Olympic swimmers Sunday afternoon.

Josh Davis, a two-time Olympian and winner of five Olympic medals, and Josh Schneider, United States National Team member and current United States record holder in the 50 meter freestyle, joined swimmers from the Superior YMCA and the area during a Mutual of Omaha Breakout! Swim Clinic at SHS.

The clinic was developed by Davis and Mutual of Omaha to inspire and motivate a new generation of swim stars. As an official sponsor of USA Swimming, Mutual of Omaha actively supports the sport on all levels, from local clubs across the country to the National Team.

Davis and Schneider spoke to the kids, who ranged in ages from pre-school to high school, about the obstacles they faced in their lives and how they overcame them. Davis talked about being the only male athlete to win three gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Schneider touched a little on breaking the American record less than a month ago in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

After talking to the students, the duo then hit the water to share some tips on swim strokes in the pool. After swimming with the special guests, the kids got to get autographs and their photographs taken with the athletes and even with two of Davis’ Olympic medals.
