Shell Lake wins Spartan Wrestling Classic

The Superior High School wrestling team finished in fifth place in its own Spartan Classic Saturday in the SHS gym.

Shell Lake won the team event with 147.5 points. Ashland was a close second with 143.5 points and Eau Claire Memorial was third with 131 points.

The host Spartans were fourth with 71.5 points, followed by Northwood, 62; Northwestern, 53; and Bayfield, 16.

Ben Regner had a big day for the host Spartans, finishing first at 215 pounds.

After receiving a first-round bye, Regner pinned his next three opponents in 15, 17 and 28 seconds. He then won the title match 16-0 over Marlo Fields of Shell Lake.

Superior’s Tom Naughton also finished second. A decision win and three pins gave Naughton a spot in the championship match, where he lost 9-7 in overtime to Ashland’s Vince Kasper.

Northwestern’s William Pedersen won the 171-pound class with three pins, a 2-0 win over Mike Niles of Ladysmith then a forfeit win over Bayfield’s Shane Basina in the title match.

Two Northwood Evergreen wrestlers also fared well as Mike Marshal won the 160-pound title and Anthony Caracci finished second at 103.

Marshal won two decisions then pinned Joe Weisenberg of Ladysmith in the championship match. After receiving two byes, Caracci picked up 10 team points for second place despite being pinned by Shell Lake’s Tyler Kozial.

The Spartans are back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ashland. Northwestern will compete next in Saturday’s Merrill Invitational.
