Wis. DA: Deputies' fatal gunfire was self-defense
PARDEEVILLE, Wis. (AP) — Columbia County prosecutors will not charge two sheriff's deputies who shot and killed a Cambridge man last month.
District attorney Jane Kohlwey says a report from the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation concludes that the deputies fired in self-defense.
Authorities received a call Nov. 14 saying 51-year-old Kelly J. Bishell was threatening to kill himself and his dog. The deputies responded to a home in rural Pardeeville.
The sheriff's department says Bishell fired on the deputies, narrowly missing Lt. Doug Jarzynski and superficially wounding Deputy Leda Wagner. The deputies returned fire.
Bishell's was the second fatal shooting involving the Columbia County Sheriff's Office in less than five months. Another deputy shot and killed a 29-year-old man in the Town of Leeds in June. Kohlwey said that shooting was also justified.
