Northwestern girls get first victory of season

The Northwestern High School girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, defeating Webster 45-38 on the road.

Ally May and Leah Karna led NHS in scoring, both finishing in double figures.

Webster took the lead late in the first quarter and led by as many as six points in the first half, but Northwestern rallied in the third quarter to reclaim the lead.

May scored consecutive baskets to get NHS within one point, and Lynsey Anttila gave Northwestern the 30-29 lead on a fast-break layup with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Karna scored four unanswered points to give NHS a 40-34 lead in the fourth quarter, and both May hit four free-throws in the final 1:09 to keep Northwestern in front for its first victory.
