Tiger boys win opener

The Northwestern High School boys basketball team got its season off to a roaring start with a 75-32 victory over Ashland Thursday in Maple.

The Tigers (1-0) took a 20-point lead at the end of the first quarter and built upon their advantage each quarter for the big win.

Ashland trailed Northwestern by only two points at 5:25 in the first quarter, but the Tigers then went on a 17-0 run.

Tyler Forsythe started the streak with a shot from the arc, and Dee Burse followed with a steal and fast-break layup to make it 14-7 for NHS. On the next possession, Ryan Santikko broke up an Oredockers’ pass inside and kicked the ball to Kendall Abrahamzon for another layup. Justin Alexson then pushed Northwestern’s lead to double figures with a long shot, and Nolan Graff followed immediately afterward with another 3-pointer.

Leading NHS in scoring was Forsythe with 23 points. Alexson had four 3-pointers as he finished with 16 points, and Abrahamzon added 10 points.

Dee Burse had eight points; Sam Williams, 7; Gabe Dinkel, 3; Graff, 3; Santikko, 3; and Jeremy Magnuson, 2.

Alex Kovald had 11 points to lead Ashland.
