Gunnar Paul Velin, 21, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in Superior.

He was born in Superior on March 3, 1989, the son of Paul and Deborah (Giersdorf) Velin.

Gunnar graduated from Superior High School in 2007 and attended UMD.

Gunnar participated in youth sports including soccer, basketball and baseball.

He was happiest when he was coaching kids, whether it was SYO baseball or Salvation Army basketball. He umpired baseball both in Superior and Duluth.

He was an avid sports fan, with baseball being his first love.

Gunnar was a member of St. Francis Church. He was a gift on loan from God. We cherish every day we had with him. He loved his family.

Gunnar is survived by his parents, Paul and Deborah Velin, Superior; three brothers Garth, Jon (Kelly Clark) and Corey (Carrie) Velin, Superior; four aunts, Dianne (Tom) Andersen of Blaine, Minn., Donna (Gordy) Huhta of Superior, Karen Malia of Brooklyn Center, Minn. and Terry Haling of El Paso, Texas; three uncles, Kevin (Linda Sigler) Giersdorf, Mike Velin and Tom (Louise) Velin, all of Superior; one special aunt, Amanda Haling; one nephew, Brady Velin; and many other cousins, relatives and friends

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Drexel and Eleanor Giersdorf and paternal grandparents, Mark and Elise Velin.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior, with a Scripture service scheduled for 7 p.m.

Visitation will continue at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church to the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial with Rev. Father James Tobolski as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Pallbearers for the service will be Zach Sitek, Nate Hendry, Sean Graskey, Brett Gunderson, Mike VanMassenhove and Max Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gunnar’s friends from the SHS Class of 2007.

The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
