I’m writing to tell you all how impressed I was with the character and class of the Superior Spartans football program in their game with Menomonie on Friday night. The way they all handled the situation with Sam, our special needs student, is to be commended.

Even after giving their all in a rather lopsided game, your players and coaches still had the fortitude to not only allow this to happen, but play a major part in carrying it off.

In all my years of playing, coaching, and watching high school sports, I have never seen such a heart-warming thing.

Friday night stands as a testament to the great people up in Superior. Your coach fully understands what it means to build a team of young men playing not for themselves, but for each other, no matter what color jersey they are wearing. Good game, Superior. Everyone here in Menomonie knows who the real winners were on Friday night.

Jim Nelson,

Menomonie, Wis.
