Spartans third, Tigers sixth at Zosel volleyball tournament

The Superior High School volleyball team finished third at the 26th annual Heidi Zosel Invitational Saturday at Northwestern High School.

Hudson won the championship while the host Tigers finished sixth in the eight-team event.

On their way to finishing in third place, the Spartans defeated Amery and Ironwood 2-0 in pool play then lost to Hudson 2-0.

During pool play Superior was led by Becky Anderson, 13 kills; Ally Keute, 28 digs, four ace serves and three kills; Marisa Miner, 47 set assists; Dani Magdzas, nine kills and two ace serves; Jessica Lindstrom, 14 kills; and Amanda Larson, seven kills and 16 digs. The Spartans also had six team blocks.

In the third-place match against Luck, Miner had 14 set assists, Lindstrom added eight kills, three digs and three ace serves, Magdzas had six ace serves and three kills and Ally Keute had eight digs.

Northwestern defeated Drummond 2-0 and lost to Luck 2-0 and Cameron 2-1 in pool play, then lost to Ironwood 2-0 in the fifth-place match.

The Tigers were led by Ally May, 31 kills and 10 digs; Liz Urbaniak, 17 kills; Katy Konczak, 13 kills and 12 digs; and Aliex Friend, 56 set assists.

The Tigers, 6-11 overall and 3-2 in the Heart O’ North Conference, host Hurley at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and Hayward at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Spartans host Duluth Marshall Tuesday and are at Rice Lake Thursday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
