TIGER ROUNDUP: Volleyball team downs Ladysmith
Cross country teams sweeps on Iron Range, golf team battles Hayward
The Northwestern High School volleyball team defeated Ladysmith 3-1 Tuesday in a Heart O’ North Conference volleyball match.
The Tigers took the first game 25-21 before dropping the second to Ladysmith 25-23. Northwestern regrouped after that to finish off the match with wins of 25-20 and 25-13.
Ally May led the Tigers on offense with 15 kills, while Liz Urbaniak added 11 kills. Aliex Friend totaled 27 set assists, and Sarah Miller finished with 10 digs.
Northwestern is now 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the HON. The Tigers next play Barron on the road Thursday.
Cross country
The Northwestern High School boys and girls cross country teams both finished first Thursday at the Eveleth Lions/Golden Bear Cross Country Meet in Minnesota.
The Tiger boys finished just one point ahead of Ashland to take first while the NHS girls were two points ahead of second-place Duluth East.
“Our boys team is really coming on,” said NHS coach John Woodbury. “There is a real battle going on to see who is going to make our top seven for varsity right now. Placing five in the top 11 in an invitational meet like that is big.”
Mason Lombard continued his impressive freshman season for the Tiger boys with a fifth-place finish. Sophomores Ryan Lind and Travis Sznaider took seventh and ninth, and seniors Josh Hensrud and Austin Berube placed 10th and 11th to round out Northwestern’s top five.
On the girls side, Jordan Johnson and the Amber sisters led the way for Northwestern. Olivia Amber took third, Johnson finished five seconds back in fifth place and Nicolette Amber finished sixth. The Tigers also had four other runners placing within the top 20.
“The girls team is running with a lot of confidence and after a good week of practice, you could tell they were ready to compete,” Woodbury said. “Having our first three girls up with the lead pack and the rest not far behind makes for a very strong team.”
The Tigers hosted the Northwestern Invitational Tuesday at Norwood Golf Course.

Hayward now holds a 14-0 conference record. The Tigers are 11-3.
“These ladies do such a good job of thinking their way around the golf course,” Hayward coach Lucy Thaler said. “I am continually impressed by the level of play that they are capable of achieving.”
Emilee McKusker of Hayward was the medalist with a 40, and teammate Jenny Xu was second with a 42.
Northwestern’s Hayley Botten carded a 44 to tie for third place. Nicolette Lindberg also earned an individual point for the Tigers by shooting a 46. Also for the Tigers Gwen LaPole had a 52; Mikaela Ganz-Brown, 56; and Molly Lattery, 62.
“Souix Creek plays very long from the women’s tees,” said NHS coach Gary Swanson. “I was thrilled that we broke the 200 mark. This was a great course for us to be on going into the conference tournament on Wednesday.”
Northwestern competes in the HON Conference championship at 9 a.m. today at Nemadji Golf Course in Superior.
