OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — A student at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh has been diagnosed with a case a viral meningitis.
The Northwestern newspaper reports that according to the Student Health Center the student was admitted to a local hospital for treatment on Wednesday.
There are multiple types of meningitis, an infection of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Viral types tend not to be as severe. Bacterial meningitis can be fatal.
The virus is spread through direct contact with an infected person's stool or through direct or indirect contact with respiratory secretions.
To reduce the risk of transmission, the health center recommends hand washing, cleaning with disinfectant and avoiding kissing, sharing glasses or lipstick with sick people.
