MINONG -- Brad Ross scored three touchdowns to power Northwood/Solon Springs to a 34-26 victory over the Bruce Raiders Friday night in Small Lakeland Conference action at Minong.
The Evergreens opened the scoring on the first drive when Josh Malone ran 64 yards for his eighth touchdown of the season and gave the Evergreens a 7-0 lead. Ross made it 14-0 when he scored a 92-yard touchdown on their next possession.
After a Bruce score made it 14-6, sophomore Brett Missine caught a 5-yard TD pass from quarterback Phil Larson to make it 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Two Bruce touchdowns pulled the Red Raiders within 21-20 before the 6-foot1m, 190-pound Ross burst in from two yards out to give the ’Greens a 27-20 halftime lead.
Ross’ third score of the night, from 18 yards out, gave Northwood/Solon Springs a 34-20 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.
A lone touchdown in the fourth quarter brought Bruce to within a score, but Northwood/Solon Springs held on for the key win over Bruce, now 1-2 in the conference and overall.
The Evergreens, 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SLC, play at 7 p.m. Friday at Luck.
