SHS soccer team takes second in Hayward tournament

HAYWARD -- The Superior High School boys soccer team finished third in the Hayward tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans lost in the semifinal 3-2 to the host Hurricanes then defeated Northland Pines in the third-place game 1-0.
Picking up the shutout was SHS senior goalkeeper Taylor Olson, who finished with 14 saves.
Senior Ethan Anderson scored the game's only goal when his kick from near midfield floated over the finger tips of Eagles keeper Evan Hartwig, who finished with 10 saves.
In the opener, Hayward scored the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left in the game.
For the first 69 minutes play went back and forth as Hayward scored 13:52 into the game and was matched by Superior's Ethan Walpole five minutes later.
Hayward's Matthew Ehlers scored with an assist from Ryan Wisdom 22:15 into the second half and Superior's Jake Swanson tied it at 2-2 just 33 seconds later with a helper from Walpole.
Olson finished with 16 saves for Superior and Jonathan Mullally had 14 for Hayward.
Superior (2-8) plays at Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The Rails are currently undefeated at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.
