APPLETON (AP) — Appleton's police chief says two officers fatally shot a man armed with two swords early Wednesday after he charged at them with the weapons.
Chief David Walsh says the officers fired several rounds at 35-year-old Armando Aponte to stop his attack.
Walsh says officers were called to Aponte's home about 2:30 a.m. to investigate a domestic disturbance. He says when officers encountered Aponte, they repeatedly told him to drop the swords, but he refused and charged at them.
Walsh says it's the first time Appleton officers have had to use deadly force in 24 years.
WLUK-TV reports the officers have been placed on administrative leave until a criminal investigation is completed.
