UW-Superior's Fitzer earns WIAC honor

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named Tom Fitzer, a senior from Chisago Lakes, Minn., its men’s soccer defensive athlete of the week for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

Fitzer was instrumental in the Yellowjackets winning their first two matches of the 2010 season last week.

“I think that Tom is very deserving of this honor in the season’s first week,” UWS coach Joe Mooney said. “He continued his streak from last year and did a good job of setting the tone early in the year for our team. I expect that we will continue to see this kind of quality play from him throughout the rest of the season.”

Fitzer had a pair of non-conference shutouts in the season’s first week. On Sept. 1, Fitzer made three saves in a season-opening 2-0 win at Bethel University. He followed that up with an eight-save effort in a 2-0 home win over Concordia University (Wis.) on Sept. 4.

The pair of shutouts also extended Fitzer’s shutout streak to 512 minutes dating back to last season.

The Yellowjacket men’s soccer team (2-1) returns to the field this weekend with a pair of road matches. They will be in Winona, Minn. on Saturday taking on St. Mary’s University. The next day they will be in La Crosse to take on Viterbo University.
