The Northwood-Solon Springs football team expected a close game with Small Lakeland Conference rival Frederic Friday, and they were not disappointed. Just one touchdown separated the two teams as Frederic defeated the Evergreens 22-14.
“It was a battle,” said Evergreens coach Jason Fox.
“The kids played their hearts out, but unfortunately came up a little short.”
Special teams came up big for Northwood in the game as the Evergreens scored one touchdown on a kick return and another on a faked punt.
Running back Josh Malone scored both touchdowns for the Evergreens, taking the ball 80 yards on the kick return and 50 yards on the punt face in the fourth quarter. For the night, Malone had 250 all-purpose yards.
The Evergreens (0-1, 1-1) are back in action Friday with another conference game, hosting Bruce (1-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. in Minong.
