Lost in the 50’s wins Over 35 softball playoff championship
Lost in the 50’s captured its first ever Superior Over 35 Men’s Softball League Upper Division playoff championship with a 15-14 win over Great Lakes Pipe recently at the 58th Street softball complex.
During its title run, Lost in the 50’s defeated Village Lanes, 15-13, and GLP 18-17 and 15-4.
GLP was the league’s regular-season champs and entered the playoffs with a 12-0 record.
Mark Luzaich, who was named Lost in the 50’s defensive MVP, recorded 13 putouts from his outfield position in the championship game.
Against Village Lanes, Vinnie Holcombe was 4-for-4 with three doubles for 50’s, and Ken Brown was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple.
With the score tied 17-17 in the semifinal game against GLP, Doug Trentor led off the bottom of the seventh inning for Lost in the 50’s with a triple. After an infield single that left Trentor on third base, he scored the winning run on Tim Schlichting’s sac fly to deep left-centerfield to give Lost in the 50’s a berth in the championship game.
Lost in the 50’s was led at the plate by Mike Jones, 4-for-4; and Luzaich, 3-for-4, including two doubles and three runs scored.
The championship game turned out to be another barnburner.
Jr. Anderson hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Pipemen to tie the game 14-14, but Jones came right back for 50’s with a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh to give his team a 15-14 lead.
Great Lakes Pipe was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving 50’s the win and the playoff title.
Besides Jones going 4-for-4 with the game-winning home run, Mike Nikstad was 3-for-4 with a three-run inside-the-park home run.
Al Kurtz Jr. was the winning pitcher in all three of the 50’s wins.
Leading hitters in the upper division were Jones, 11-for-12; and Luzaich, 9-for-12.
For Great Lakes Pipe, Dave Sigfrids was 12-for-14 and Mike “Louie” Luzaich was 13-for-15.
Members of the champion 50’s team are: Rick Karlon, John Graves, Brad Thompson, Rick McDermott, Luzaich, Nikstad, Holcombe, Schlichting, Brown, Kurtz, Jeff Gilbertson, Trentor, Jones, Kirk Bolts, John Becker and manager Tony LaValley.
In the Over 35 lower division playoffs, O’Neill’s Pub went 3-0 to win its first playoff championship as O’Neill’s after winning several playoff titles as Lost in the 50’s.
O’Neill’s defeated the Capri, 16-12; Striker’s, 18-10; and Temple Bar, 17-9.
