Man shoots at off-duty Milwaukee officer

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police have arrested a 19-year-old man after he allegedly beat his girlfriend and shot at an off-duty police officer.

Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz says witnesses saw the man beating the woman and then showed them a gun at about noon Friday. He then ran away.

Witnesses then called police and an off-duty officer. When the suspect saw the off-duty officer, the suspect shot at him and hit his vehicle. The two then exchanged more gunfire but no one was injured.

Another off-duty officer saw the suspect running and caught him. Schwartz says on-duty officers took the man to jail.

The suspect has an arrest record for robbery and other gun offenses.

The officer who fired shots is a five-year veteran. The other is a 25-year veteran.
