Marine Staff Sgt. Jason A. Lehto was 31 when he was killed in a noncombat incident in Al Anbar Province, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

A Marine Corps reservist and explosives expert, he was married with three sons when he was killed.

According to military officials, Lehto’s job in Iraq was to find and disarm explosives.

His stepfather, Chuck Walsh, said he was an outstanding young man who loved his family and was “gung-ho” about his military service and country.

Lehto was assigned to the Support Group 47, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, out of Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison township.

He volunteered for active duty the summer before he was killed Dec. 28, 2004.
