IRON RIDGE, Wis. (AP) — A 4-year-old girl has been killed by a dog near the eastern Wisconsin town of Iron Ridge.
Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls says the boxer was apparently tied to a pole when it managed to free itself shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday. The dog then attacked the girl, who was playing in the same yard.
The girl was taken to a local hospital. A helicopter was standing by, ready to take off, but she died before she could be flown to a Madison hospital. Her name has not been released.
Nehls says girl was visiting a family friend's home when the dog got loose. When authorities arrived, the dog appeared to have pulled out of its collar.
The Dodge County Humane Society took the animal, which had no previous history of violence. The sheriff says it hasn't been decided if the dog will be euthanized.
