1-day-old giraffe dies at Green Bay's NEW Zoo

SUAMICO, Wis. (AP) — A baby giraffe has died at Green Bay's NEW Zoo, marking the second unsuccessful birth for the 5-year-old mother.

Zoo officials say the female calf was weak when it was born early Saturday and couldn't nurse on its own.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette says zoo staff and a veterinarian fed the baby through a feeding tube but it died after 36 hours.

Zoo officials say the mother, Zuri, is doing well. They say it's not unusual for baby giraffes to die during or shortly after birth.

Staffers at the zoo say 70 percent of giraffes in the nation are related, which can cause genetic problems.

"Zuri" means "pretty" in Swahili.
