Spartan golfers split in season opener

Under overcast skies and the threat of rain throughout the morning, the Superior High School girls golf team kicked off its season with a second-place finish Wednesday morning at Rolling Oaks Golf Course in Barron.

The Hayward Hurricanes won the three-team Heart O’ North Conference meet with a team score of 178. The Spartans were second at 213 and the host Golden Bears came in at 223.

Allison Gotelaere took low-score honors for Superior with a 41, which was also good for second place over behind Hayward’s Brittany Neff, who carded a 38.

Other Spartan scores were: Abby Clemons, 55; Alisha Moran, 57; Anne Tracy, 60; and Kali O’Neill, 63.

Hayward picked up two conference points with the win and claimed five of the top eight spots. Other Hurricane golfers were: Jenny Xu, 42; Emilee McCusker, 48; Rachel Magowan, 50; and Julie Schmock, 52.

Superior picked up one conference point while Barron failed to point.

Up next for Superior is the Hayward Invitational at 9 a.m. today at the Hayward Golf Club. Eleven teams and 55 golfers are scheduled to be in action, including the Northwestern Tigers.

Superior’s schedule gets busy with five events next week.
