Telegram team heavily favored?
'Papermakers' taking part in United Way fundraiser
The following is another “Have Fun or Get Out of the Way” column by Don Leighton and Mike Granlund and their alter egos, Lance Boyle and Billy Pirkola, which runs occasionally in The Superior Telegram.
The Superior Telegram softball team, undefeated on the year, are placed by this paper as heavy favorites in the United Way softball tournament that will begin at 2 today at the Hayes Court baseball complex behind the “Red Owl” (Belknap Plaza Jubilee). Battling beauticians, bartenders and accountants doesn’t seem even fair to us.
With over 100 years of softball experience in Lance Boyle and Billy Pirkola alone, the Papermakers (0-0) should surpass all others in that area. Top that with a company that actually has their own sports department and you can see why Lance and Billy say the odds favor their team.
Team manager, coach and captain Ken Olson is still tinkering with his lineup, but since Telegram General Manager Erin Makela played High School softball, she will be in a key position. Executive Editor Shelly Nelson is a cinch to get on base, as opponents fear bad press coverage. And who could overthrow Photographer Jed Carlson, who stands 6-foot-5, at first base?
With a smaller staff at the paper, Olson is also scouring past payroll records in an attempt to secure at least one or two more former paper carriers who have ability on the diamond. Don’t we have a vacant position in advertising or layout that we could fill just for this game?
Rumor has it that the UPS driver can catch a fly ball and Paul Stein’s timely golf columns have made him an eligible participant. Maria Lockwood’s brothers were great athletes, so maybe she …. on second thought, we better forecast rain for 2 p.m. today.
In case of rain, the make-up date is Friday, Sept. 24.
Boyleing in the Pirkolater
Superior and Northwestern football teams are both scrimmaging in Rice Lake today. Without the events even taking place, we can almost quote our coaches “We are very happy with our team. They are executing quite well for this early in the season and getting better every day. Competition is close at a couple of positions and we are still looking for one or two sophomores to emerge and show they can play ball at this level.”
Thanks guys.
On Brett Favre: Look around the office; are those 40-year-old guys still working? How do they do it at that age? We think he just wants to set a record for unused sick leave.
