Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour will be in Milwaukee today at a high-dollar fundraiser for the Republican Governors Association (RGA).
The event is not your average fundraiser, at least by Wisconsin standards. According to an invitation posted at Wispolitics.com, the minimum donation is $25,000 with corporate contributions accepted.
To put that in perspective, $10,000 is the maximum anyone can donate directly to a gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin.
Jay Heck, director of Wisconsin Common Cause, says the high price of admission means the RGA is going after a very select group of donors to influence Wisconsin's election.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars is not going to build new office suites for the Republican Governors Association,” he says. “This money will be turned around and used to influence the outcome of an election here in Wisconsin."
The RGA did not respond to requests for comment.
A review of IRS records by Wisconsin Public Radio last month showed that Wisconsin donors gave the group more than $350,000 in the first half of this year, which included seven donations of $25,000 or more.
On the other side of the political spectrum, Wisconsin donors gave the Democratic Governors Association about $70,000. They also gave the Democratic Greater Wisconsin Political Fund $175,000.
