Racing returns to Superior Speedway

After a week off for the Head of the Lakes Fair, racers and fans were ready for a good night of racing at the Superior Speedway and that is what they got Friday night.
In the late models, Buffalo’s Eric Breeschoten made his first appearance of the 2010 racing season and came out to win the first heat in the division. He was followed by Adam Hensel and Gregg Hill.
In the second heat it was the familiar No. 11 car of Pat Doar who took the checkered flag for his fourth heat win of the season. Harry Hanson from Eveleth came across the line next and then Darrell Nelson. And in the third heat, Solon Springs’ Todd Gehl won his first heat race of the season, followed by Aaron Lillo and Joey Ogston.
In the late model feature it was all Doar as he started on the inside of the second row, was in the lead after turns one and two and never looked back. By the halfway point of the race, Doar already had and full straightaway lead over Gehl and was getting faster as the race continued. He wove through lap traffic into Twin Ports NAPA Auto Care Center victory lane for the second time in 2010. Doar was followed by Gehl, Hill, Lillo, Hensel and Nelson.
The pure stocks were the featured class of the night as all the drivers were brought up on stage and introduced before the feature race.
When the feature began, the front rows of cars were four wide coming past the front grandstands, and after the first lap it was Al Rapp in the lead.
There was a back-and-forth battle between Rapp and Richard Dzelak Jr. with each driver taking the lead. Finally, Dzelak took and held the lead on lap 10.
Dzelak held everyone off to win his third feature of the season. Rapp finished in second, followed by Dustin Follet, who started in the eighth row, Matt Madsen and Dan Larsen rounding out the top five.
Earlier in the night in the heat races it was Pat VanErt who won his fourth heat of the season in the first heat, followed by Madsen and Larsen. In the second heat of six laps it was Rapp winning his first heat race of the season with Justin Madsen crossing the line next and then Caitlyn Carlson. In the third and final heat, Rick Cornlison won, followed by Steve Udeen and Dzelak.
In the modified feature, Rick Rivord jumped out the early lead and was out front until the 13th lap, when Ryan Aho got around him on the front stretch. On the next lap a caution came out after Darrell Nelson spun out between turns 3 and 4.
On the restart Kelly Estey took advantage and beat Rivord to the bottom of turn one, took over second and then he caught Aho and passed him on the high side of turns 1 and 2. Estey went on to win his first feature of 2010. Aho finished second, followed by Rivord, Al Uotinen and Jody Bellefeuille.
In the heat races, Bryan Hessler from Chetek made his first appearance of the season count as he won the first heat, followed by Nelson and Nick Lavato. In the second heat it was just the opposite of the feature, with Aho winning followed by Estey and Bellefeuille.
In the super stocks it was a battle from the drop of the green flag as Mike Bellefeuille, Tom Treviranus and Willie Johnson went three wide down the front stretch — but it was Bellefeuille who came out of the first turns in the lead.
Bellefeuille remained the leader, though battling hard with Scott Lawrence, until Lawrence overtook him for the lead on lap eight. Bellefeuille would take the lead back but then a caution came out when Treviranus spun out, stopping the race. On the restart Lawrence took advantage and recaptured the lead from Bellefeuille.
A caution on the next lap that was caused by Keith Kern spinning out Robbie Cooper, who trying to avoid a collision but hit a rut and rolled his car in turn four. He was OK, but his car was loaded on a tow truck and hauled to the pits. On the restart, this time it was Mike Weber who took advantage and took a run at Lawrence. The two went side by side down both the front and back stretch for two laps until Weber finally got the lead with one lap to go and held off Lawrence to win his third feature of the season. Lawrence finished second followed by Bellefeuille, Dave Flynn and Joe Olson.
Bellefeuille won the first heat followed by Weber and Oliver. In the second heat it was Willie Johnson Jr. winning his first heat race, Jim Campbell was next and then Treviranus.
Like the late model feature, there wasn’t a whole lot to talk about in the Midwest modifieds except for the great run of Scott Herrick, who captured the lead on the third lap and never looked back at the rest of the pack to win his second feature win of the season.
Herrick was followed in the feature by Skeeter Estey, Taylor Leuthner, Cody Wolkowski and E.J. Hietala.
In heat races Adam Archer picked up his first heat win of the season in heat race one. Shawn Rivord finished second and Wolkowski was third. In the second heat it was Estey winning his second heat race, followed by Deven Van House and Hietala. In the third heat it was Herrick followed by Jesse Ogston and Dan Kingsley.
Friday is meet the drivers night with all drivers signing autographs, taking pictures and meeting the fans starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be no hot laps. Racing starts at 7 p.m.
