STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will no longer sell bottled water on campus.
School officials say they're trying to help the environment by eliminating plastic containers.
Jerry Lineburger is with the school's University Center. He tells Wisconsin Public Radio the campus has outfitted its drinking fountains with filling attachments. That way students can fill their own bottles with Stevens Point municipal water.
He says the move will eliminate 30 to 50 percent of the plastic containers on campus. The school will still sell sports drinks, juice and some soda products in plastic bottles.
Lineburger says the policy was enacted after the Student Government Association asked that the university make water available for free rather than sell it.
