‘Niko’ leads Wisconsin to team title

Fresh off winning a WIAA state wrestling championship, Superior’s Nikola (Niko) Bogojevic hasn’t slowed down a bit.

Bogojevic is currently one of the team captains of the Wisconsin Junior National Greco-Roman and Freestyle Team, which competed last weekend in both styles in the Junior National Dual Meet Tournament in Oklahoma City.

Wisconsin won the team national championship by knocking off returning champion Illinois in the finals on Saturday evening. Illinois had a four-year win streak snapped by the Wisconsin team.

Wisconsin held a three-point lead until Bogojevic pinned Wes Catheart in the 285-pound match to clinch the championship for Wisconsin.

Enroute to the championship match, Wisconsin had decisive wins over Kansas, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, North Dakota, Georgia, Pennsylvania and South Dakota.

Team Wisconsin took fourth place in freesytle.

The Wisconsin boys had victories over Minnesota, California, Michigan, New Jersey, Florida, Colorado and Kansas, but lost a 31-30 decision to Iowa before losing the third-place match to Ohio, 37-16.

Bogojevic had a 17-2 record during the four-day event.

Team Wisconsin now turns its attention to preparing for the Junior Nationals individual tournament July 18 in Fargo, N.D.

Bogojevic is the defending Greco-Roman Junior National Champion at 285. He is also an all-American in both styles and placed third last year in freestyle.
