MILWAUKEE (AP) — University of Wisconsin System regents will meet at UW-Milwaukee on Thursday to consider raising tuition by 5.5 percent at most state universities.

The Board of Regents will consider the increase as part of a proposed $5.6 billion operating budget for the system of 13 four-year universities and 13 two-year colleges.

The 5.5 percent increase would be for undergraduate students from Wisconsin attending 11 of the 13 universities. Increases at UW-Madison and UW-Eau Claire would be higher as those campuses phase in tuition surcharges.

Students from families that earn less than $60,000 per year would receive grants to offset the increases.

Tuition at the two-year colleges would be frozen for the fourth straight year under the plan.
