The Northwestern Tiger softball team saw its season end with a 6-5 loss at Rice Lake Thursday evening.
Rice Lake will now play in the sectional semifinals against Mosinee at 3 p.m. Thursday at Medford. The other semifinal Thursday has Altoona playing at Baldwin-Woodville at 5 p.m.
The winners will play for a state berth at 3 p.m. Friday, June 11 in Rice Lake.
Tigers 6, Dockers 2
The Tigers advanced to the regional title game with a 6-2 win at Ashland on Tuesday.
Northwestern had 11 hits, including two from Anna Morgan, Liz Urbaniak, Betsy Hendrick and Shelby Schulz and one each from Kelcee Janigo, Tiana Arseneau and Alie Larsen.
Urbaniak started on the mound for the Tigers, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Schultz also pitched in the seventh inning, allowing two hits with a walk.
Tigers 12, Rails 1, 5 innings
The Tigers won their WIAA Division 2 playoff opener 12-1 in five innings over the Spooner Rails Thursday evening in Brule.
Shelby Schulz was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Tiana Arseneau pitched the final inning, allowing a hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
Schulz also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3.
Kelcee Janigo, Anna Morgan, Taylor Prior and Arseneau added two hits apiece and Betsy Hendrick, Sara Miller and Allie Larsen added a hit each.
Prior also had three RBIs, Janigo and Miller knocked in two runs each and Morgan, Schultz and Amber Eller had one RBI apiece.
Midgets 5, ’Greens 2
The season also ended for the Northwood Evergreens, who lost 5-2 at Hurley on Thursday.
The Midgets will now play Bruce in the sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Shell Lake. The winner will advance to play the McDonell Central-Thorp winner at 5 p.m. on June 11 in Gilman.
