The Northwood Evergreens softball team clinched the Central Lakeland Conference championship on Monday then defeated the Hayward Hurricanes Tuesday.
The Evergreens finished with a 7-1 record in league play with a 4-2 win over Turtle Lake/Clayton Monday. Northwood then defeated Hayward 6-4. Both games were played in Minong.
“The girls didn’t hit well (Monday), but were able to generate enough runs to pick up the win,” NHS coach Beth Block said.
Cameron finished in second place in the conference with a 6-2 record.
Three of Northwood’s runs came in the first inning, with the fourth run coming in the third inning. TL/C scored single runs in the second and sixth innings.
Lisa Featherly, Annie Block, Ashley Block, Shelby Callaway, Tressa Harings and Sara Radzak had a hit apiece for the ’Greens. Harings was the winning pitcher, allowing only a sixth-inning single to Alex Tschida.
Against Hayward, Teagen Harings tripled and singled, Featherly doubled and singled, Annie and Ashley Block each singled twice and Rachel Hanley singled once and walked three times.
Northwood scored two runs apiece in the first, third and sixth innings.
Hayward scored all four of its runs in the third inning.
Tracey Nebel led Hayward with a pair of hits.
Northwood opens WIAA tournament play by hosting Solon Springs on Thursday.
