UPDATED: Superior falls to Ashland in 10 innings

The Superior High School baseball team lost to the Ashland Oredockers 1-0 in 10 innings Thursday evening at Northland College in Ashland.

The loss drops Superior to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Ashland not only improves to 13-2 overall, but it also ties the Spartans atop the LSC standings with a 4-1 record and 16 points.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, they only have one two-point game remaining with Duluth Central, while Ashland has two four-points game left with Duluth Marshall and Duluth Central.

Ashland’s CJ Smith and Superior’s Dylan Ramage pitched excellent games.

Smith struck out 12 batters, gave up four hits and walked four in nine innings, while Ramage allowed three hits and struck out seven batters through eight innings, before giving way to Grant Rindal, who gave up three hits and struck out one batter.

Adam Raspotnik picked up the win with one strikeout in one inning.

Smith scored the only run of the game when he led off the bottom of the 10th inning with triple and scored on Mitch Mountain’s single.

Superior had six hits, including two apiece by Taylor Olson and Marty Manion, a double by Kellen McCoshen and a single by Zach Magdzas.

Smith had two of Ashland’s six hits, with Taylor Stibbe, Adam Foris, Brad Dufek and Mountain each adding a single.

The Spartans’ best chance to score came when they loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning.

After Olson singled and McCoshen doubled, Ashland intentionally walked Ramage to load the bases. Smith got Ashland got out of the jam by striking out the next batter.

The Spartans are back in action Friday at the Bugliosi “Wood Bat” Classic in Hibbing. Superior will play the host Blue Jackets at 7 p.m. today, and Cloquet and Thief River Falls beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The SHS JV defeated Ashland 10-9. Superior dug out of an 8-3 deficit in the sixth inning by scoring five runs in the sixth to tie it and two in the seventh to win it. The Spartans' five runs in the sixth came on five hits, including RBI hits from Brady Uotinen, Nik Mattson and Al Meehan. They went on to score the winning runs in the seventh on a double from Trent Olson and an inside-the-park home run from Paul Edwards, who had three hits on the day. Luke Darwin also had two hits. Meehan started on the mound and pitched three innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking five. Olson got the win by pitching three innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking five. Spencer Severson also pitched one scoreless inning.
