Stampede kick off 2010 season SundayTwin Ports football team opens at South Metro Dragons
When the Twin Ports (formerly Superior) Stampede kick off the 2010 season at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against South Metro at Minnetonka High School, the name change is not the only thing new for the upcoming season.
The Northern Elite Football League expanded for a second year in a row, adding three new teams: the South Metro Dragons, St. Paul Pioneers and Rochester Giants.
All three teams are serious contenders for the NEFL championship, as all three teams have won league championships prior to joining the NEFL. The Pioneers are the reigning National Champion in Adult-Amateur Football.
Besides the new competition for the Stampede, there’s new competition on the roster.
Several of the Stampede core players retired after the 2009 season, leaving many opportunities for someone else to shine. In all, the Stampede lost 12 players from last year’s roster.
Gone are running backs Kevin Guillory and Matt Grammer, linebackers Nick Farrell and Nick Treumer, wide receiver Kelly Katoski, free safety Andel Brown, fullback Joe Dupree, defensive end Marlon Glaspie, defensive tackles Dan Rossow and Kevin Szczyrbak, and offensive tackle Marty Schubitzke. Also, linebacker Steve Runquist has left the Stampede to re-join the Saints at St. Scholastica.
The losses of so many contributors could have been devastating. However, several new faces to the roster promise to keep the Stampede competitive.
New to the Stampede are cornerback Carl Ragsdale, wide receivers Maurice Henderson and Jonah Parrot, free safety Antavius Thomas, linebackers Greg and Jake Nelson, Dave Hjelle, Matt Black, Terance Neal and Zachary Stano, defensive end Aaron Tody, tight end Josh Gosar, offensive tackles Lucas Bratland and Jesse Beasley, offensive guard Ben Laposky, and defensive tackles Billy O’Connell and John Ellison.
Returning for a second stint with the Stampede are running back Hollis Dukes, defensive end Antonio O’Neil and free safety Crockett Turcotte.
Key returners for the Stampede are strong safety Tony Murray, wide receivers LaShawn Bullock and Ryan DeZurik, linebacker Tim Manns, quarterback Dave White, tight ends Kevin Holm and Andy Dahl, cornerbacks Courtney Walters and Addison Griffin, wide receiver/kicker Sean Gallagher, strong safety Nate Glinski, running back Jalon Hopkins, center Andy McKinnon, defensive ends Jason Grammer and Travis Larson, offensive tackle Charles Fields, offensive guards Jimmy Johnson and Korey Jazdewski, and defensive tackles Kyle Bukovich and Jon Derungs.
Leading the Stampede in 2010 is head coach Matt Krivinchuk, who is entering his third season with an overall record of 16-4.
His assistant coaches are Jesse Falter, offensive line; Mike Williams, offensive coordinator; Matt Gramer, running backs; Geoff Torzewski, offensive intern; Benny Peterson, defensive line; Nathaniel Coward, linebackers; and Aaron Tody, defensive line.
The Stampede kick off the season at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against the South Metro Dragons. The game will be played at Minnetonka High School. All mothers get in free and receive a gift.
