Spring phenology sightings keep trickling in as spring progresses. Wild ginger, barren strawberry, polygala, blueberry, and Juneberry are blooming. Grass — and dandelions — are growing enough where landowners are starting to mow their lawns.

Canada geese eggs are now hatching, and upland sandpipers have returned. Their “wolf whistle” call is quite distinctive.

Regular burning permits have once again been reinstated. Keep in mind, though, that this can change as the humidity drops or as fuels start drying again. Make sure to check daily after 11 a.m. before you burn by calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) or checking online at www.dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire. Burning with a regular annual permit is not allowed until after 6 p.m.
