MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Natural Resources Board has approved a fall deer hunt structure that would relax pressure on antlerless deer.
Hunters will be allowed to kill only bucks in 18 management zones where the population is under goal, up from 13 zones last fall. The board also reduced the number of zones with antlerless-only herd control hunts from 50 last year to 46 this fall.
The plan comes after hunters complained the Department of Natural Resources' herd control strategies have devastated the herd and put their sport in danger.
DNR officials say the new structure should help the herd grow. The board approved the structure on a 6-1 vote at a meeting Wednesday in Green Bay.
