Wisconsin officials: Scale back antlerless quotas

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Natural Resources Board is set to consider a fall deer hunt structure wildlife officials say should help grow the herd.

The Department of Natural Resources has proposed allowing hunters to kill only bucks in 18 management zones where the population is under goal, up from 13 such zones last year. The agency also wants to reduce the number of zones with antlerless-only herd control hunts to 46, down from 50 last year.

The plans come after hunters complained last fall that agency herd control policies have devastated the herd and put their sport in jeopardy.

The board is set to vote on the changes at a Wednesday meeting in Green Bay.
