DNR suspends burning permits

Rapidly changing weather conditions have caused the wildfire danger in northern Wisconsin to go from low to very high overnight.

Burning permits have once again been suspended. Thursday evening DNR and local fire departments put out a 113-acre blaze southwest of Grantsburg.

The DNR is asking everyone to be mindful of the danger in any type of outdoor burning.

“Yesterday’s fire is proof that dead leaves and grasses can dry quickly and become readily burnable despite the rain we had a few days ago,” said St. Croix Area Forestry Leader, Steve Runstrom. “High winds and low humidity’s,” Runstrom said, “combine to dry out this vegetation.”

The Forester asks anyone who plan to use a burning permit to check the DNR website at dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire, or, call (888) WIS-BURN. Burning permit restrictions change daily.
