Prep Roundup: Solon Springs softball team wins

Evergreens down Eagles in Dome; Tiger softball team wins

Eagle girls win

Between the volleyball and basketball seasons, it has been a rough year for female athletes at Solon Springs School. The Eagles turned things around Thursday night with a 15-5 win over Luck in five innings.

“It’s been a long time since our girls had a win in any sport,” said Eagles softball coach Dale Rajala. “I’m really proud of how they played.”

Leading Solon Springs at the plate was Alex Sickler, who went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Kate LaRose was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Vanessa Zenan pitched all five innings for the Eagles to get the win. She gave up three hits while striking out six.

Solon Springs was also aided in its efforts by Luck’s struggle to place its pitches. The Eagles drew 19 walks in Thursday’s game.

Solon Springs, now 1-2 overall, is back in action today with a non-conference home game against Washburn.

Northwood wins in Dome

The Northwood Evergreens baseball team broke open a close game with six runs in the sixth inning Tuesday to defeat Solon Springs 13-5 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Tyler LaRose had driven in four runs with a double and single and had held the Evergreens in check from the mound for a 5-3 Eagles lead through five innings.

But in the sixth, Northwood got a bases-loaded triple by Josh Malone that hit the outfield wall on one bounce to clear the bases.

Northwood added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a Tanner Tate inside-the-park home run.

Sam Radzak was the winning pitcher. Brad Ross and Radzak each had two hits.

Northwood went to 3-1 on the season and Solon Springs fell to 1-2.

Tiger girls win

The Northwestern High School softball team defeated Ladysmith 8-2 Thursday evening. The Tigers are now 3-1 for the season.

Northwestern hosts Cumberland in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. today and then hosts Chetek at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The NHS girls play their home games at the field in Brule.
