Superior archers place third in state

SMS team hosts, and wins, own meet

The archery program at Superior Middle School achieved another first this year. On March 8, the Spartan youth archers held their first meet against local competitors.

Taking part in the first annual Superior Shootout with the Spartans were two archery teams from Minnesota: Grand Rapids and Mountain Iron-Buhl. Although Superior was technically the host school, each team shot on its home course and submitted its scores to participate in the virtual tournament.

Superior coach Steve Fregin said he hopes to coordinate with the northern Minnesota schools next year to actually bring them to SMS for the second annual event.

Superior took first place as a team in both the elementary school and middle school levels for the inaugural shootout. Hannah Labois of Grand Rapids was the top individual elementary school female archer with a score of 258. Noah Erickson of MIB led the elementary school boys with a 276. At the middle school level, Michelle Meyers of Grand Rapids won for the girls (260) and Jared Schultz of MIB won for the boys (276).

Shortly after hosting the local meet, the Superior archers competed in the Wisconsin state archery tournament, held Mach 26 in Wisconsin Rapids. Both the middle school and elementary school teams placed third overall. The elementary archers scored 2,661 points, and the middle schoolers had 2,858 points.

Two Superior girls also finished within the top 10 of their divisions to earn individual recognition. Amiee Moran placed seventh of elementary school girls with a score of 238. Justine Stenberg had 253 points to take eighth place for the middle school division.

Top individual honors for the Superior boys went to Andrew Jaques at the elementary school level and Alex Kasparek among middle school archers. Jaques finished 25th with a score of 238, and Kasparek was 31st.
