Niko wins state title

Bogojevic wins by pin in 285-pound championship match

Superior High School’s Nikola Bogojevic put the finishing touches on a perfect season by pinning South Milwaukee’s Bill Mitchell in the 285-pound championship match of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Bogojevic finished his senior year with a 48-0 record by pinning Mitchell in 4:37. Mitchell’s season ends with a record of 18-1.

Bogojevic’s state wrestling title is expected to be just the second state championship at SHS. Bob Olson, who went on to play football at Notre Dame, is thought to have won a state title in the late 1960s.

Bogojevic’s quest for a state title began with a pair of wins on Thursday, pinning Seth Brand of Reedsburg Area in 37 seconds then winning a 5-2 decision over Slinger’s Jake Schall.

Bogojevic advanced to the title match with a 5-1 decision over Kenosha Tremper’s Najee Parker (48-3) Friday night.

Mitchell, also a senior, advanced to the championship match with a 4-2 overtime win over Evan Knutson of Wausau West.

Mitchell’s wins on Thursday were a 3-0 decision over Joe Sychner of Badger and a pin of Alex Cochrane of Kettle Moraine in 1:36.

Wausau West’s Evan Nelson won the third-place match over Wisconsin Rapids’ Curt Fuller, 2-1 in two overtimes.

Nelson, who entered the state tournament ranked No. 2, lost to Mitchell in the semifinals, 4-2 in overtime. Bogojevic defeated Nelson in last week’s sectional championship match.

NIKO NOTES: Bogojevic entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in the state and in the top 10 in the nation. … Bogojevic’s pin of Brandt holds the distinction of the fastest pin during the first day of the tournament. That was 1 second faster than Wisconsin Rapids sophomore Kasey Einerson’s 38-second pin of Schofield D.C. Everest’s Josh Dupis in their Division 1 quarterfinal at 130. … Schall won the fifth-place match with a 12-4 major decision over Parker.
