Boys swimming
The SHS boys swim team finished third of four teams Saturday as it hosted the Head of the Lakes Invite. Hudson walked away with first place, while the Duluth team was second with 357. Superior finished with a team score of 304.5.
Superior coach George Lehman was pleased the Spartan squad challenged Duluth for second place through most of the meet, despite missing senior captain Andre Anderson, who was in Menomonie for the district DECA competition.
“We had a great meet,” Lehman said. “Most of the swimmers dropped time despite the heavy practice load during these past three weeks.”
Sophomore sprinter George Eisenman edged the field in the 50 freestyle and had a great back and forth race with Hudson’s Luke Wusterbarth to win the 100 freestyle. Senior captain Mike Sherwood dove to a personal best and moved into seventh on the SHS all-time list.
Jake Noonan challenged Hudson’s Jay Skinner but fell just short to take second in the 200 freestyle. Noonan also swam well to take third in the 500 freestyle. His finishes in both races were personal best times.
“With sectionals only three weeks away, things are looking good,” Lehman said. “Some of our depth swimmers are becoming more competitive. Mason Ford and McQuade Arnold improved to score well in the sprints while Vikram Gill, Dylan Holck and Scott Kvam are nearing last year’s taper times even before we start resting.”
Superior returns to action at 5 p.m. Thursday against Grand Rapids at the SHS pool. The Spartans then travel to Eau Claire for the Husky Invitational Saturday.
